Thousand foot drops offs on either side of the 2 foot wide, sandstone trail. For a half-mile, you have to try your hardest not to look down as you hike along the hog’s back ridgeline. The only thing that keeps you from tumbling over the edge are the intermittent chains that are drilled into the rock. But if you make it to the end, you will be shown a view of the Zion Valley below that you’ll never forget. Delicate Arch | Arches National Park
The Delicate Arch. It is probably the most recognizable symbol of Utah. So much so, that we’ve put it on our license plates. And when something is as much of a part of a state’s identity, like Mt. Rushmore or Old Faithful, it usually means it’s a giant tourist trap. This makes it hard to appreciate the beauty of something when you are constantly being elbowed out of the way for someone else to take a picture. So our expectations were set pretty low as we drove out from Devil’s Campground in Arches National Park and pulled into the Delicate …
Hiking through Åndalsnes, Norway
The moment we emerged from the last tunnel, and our eyes adjusted to the light, I knew we had picked a great town to stay in. A huge mountain range that pierced into the clouds, dropped off into the fjord where the town of Åndalsnes stood. For two days, my girlfriend Courtney and I stayed in a cabin at a campground with the intent of seeing and doing as much as possible while in Åndalsnes. All around us towered an incredible, vast landscape of snow capped mountains, views of a serpentine river, and the endless expanse of the fjord. It was only …
The Presidential Traverse
Iconic, euphoric, dangerous, beautiful, and gruesome are all adjectives that can be used to describe one famous hike in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, the Presidential Traverse. To complete this traverse, hikers climb all of the mountains in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains in one continuous hike that’s nearly 23 miles long with close to 9,000 feet of elevation gain. Our goal was to climb the 8 peaks over two days, getting there on a Friday night and finishing up on Sunday. Like mostly everything I do, it needed to be packed into a single weekend, and …
Hiking Trip Photos Uploaded
This summer has been a big one for hiking trips! It’s taken us to the White Mountains of New Hampshire, the Green Mountains of Vermont, and whatever you want to call the hill in Rhode Island. We were able to accomplish our goal of hiking the tallest peak in each state of New England . And we finished a bucket list item of the Presidential Traverse. Check out the albums on Facebook. Visit Achensee Lake in Tirol, Austria
Simply beautiful. This is one of those places I’ve been, where the words to describe my first view of this place are difficult to formalize. Sounds cliché, and it totally is, but I still stand by my statement. Our taxi driver picked the four of us up from the train station and headed north, towards the mountains. The small towns we passed through were so tight, I barely thought one car could pass through, let alone us and the ones he kept passing. The road began upward from the valley, along these winding mountain roads that Zachary KenneyHi there, my …
Finishing The Appalachian Trail [Pictures]
My friend, Christian, accomplished a dream of his, which was to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. We were lucky enough to share that moment with him at the finish of the trail, on the summit of Mount Katahdin. The Appalachian Trail begins at Springer Mountain, Georgia, travels 2,198 miles to the summit of Mount Katahdin, Maine. It passes through 14 states: Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Diary of a Backpacker | Catskills | [Video]
Tried my best to capture some of the misadventures that we all experience while on the trail. From getting lost, going in the wrong direction, running out of food & water, struggles with being bear-proof, shitty views, you name it. But it wasn’t all bad, even though it was very humid and hot in NY, the Catskills have amazing mountains to climb and beautiful landscapes to admire. This hike took us on an overnight through the Burroughs Range which is highlighted by Slide Mountain. My friend Eddie and his girlfriend, Courtney, invited me to join them on an overnight during …
Hiking Mount Washington [Video]
My friends and I hiked the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail up Mount Washington, NH. There is no other hike in the Northeast quite like it. The views above the tree line are so expansive and wondrous. The hike itself was quite challenging with over 4,000ft over vert. We started our morning at the Tarry Ho Campground and made our way to the trailhead parking lot. Up and away we went, taking the trail all the way to the beautiful Lake of the Clouds. After a quick stop, we made our push up to the summit where luckily the summit photo-op was …
Hike Mount Katahdin
Every year in the fall, a group of friends get together to hike up a mountain in New England. In the past, it’s been Mount Washington, up in New Hampshire. This year, the seven of us made the trek up north to Baxter State Park in Millinocket, Maine. Eight hours in the car later, we made it to the Katahdin Stream Campground. Baked beans and hotdogs o’ plenty were all set for the weekend. After a night around the campfire eating and star gazing into the beautiful, clear Main skies, we set off for our tents as the cold-front came …
